Jesus said:” When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends,
in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.
Rather, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.
For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” Luke 14:1.7-14

Pinoys are fond of social gatherings. They invite people who invited them in the past and who would likely invite them in the future.
Pinoys also see people as good investments. They value emotional bank accounts in others.
There is nothing bad with investing on people. But what we should consider too is our bank account with God. God is in fact the best investment anyone can make.
But before investing on God, one must know Him very well as we do with our other clients. For one thing, God loves the humble. Mary has said “God has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed.” Mark 1:46-55
God loves not only the humble but also those who like Him loves the humble. “Whoever humbles oneself like a child will be great in My kingdom.” Matthew 18:4
Thus in today’s gospel He gives us advice on humility specifically during social gatherings. He gives two simple tips:
First, in others’ feast be humble and seat yourself in the lowest place. Do not think highly of yourself. Go to the lowest place.
Second, in your own feast invite the humble who cannot invite you back. Seek not any compensation from people except from God.
