As Christians, we are all pilgrims. As we follow the Lord Jesus, our journey with Him is not free from sorrows. Sometimes, when they come, we complain and blame.
In the 1st Reading, the prophet Elijah, who was so afraid, fled for his life because he came to know soldiers of Ahab and Jezebel were ordered to kill him for slaughtering the prophets of Baal, cried out to the Lord, “Enough, LORD! Take my life…” Isn’t it that sometimes, when overwhelmed by life’s challenges, we want to give up on life and our God? But what is God’s response? God provided Elijah with food and water.
In the Gospel, knowing how frail we are, the Lord does not give us any ordinary food. He gives Himself to us as food when He said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever.” By eating and receiving the Lord Jesus as the Bread of Life, may forever! How? In Holy Communion, we experience the following effects:
We can experience a lot of desolating experiences along the way. But by receiving Jesus, our Bread of Life, we do not only meet the God of Surprises but are being sustained by the God of all Consolations. How can we thank our God who is more than enough? Let this be our simple prayer, “Taste and see the goodness of the Lord!” Amen.
