Can Only God Forgive Sins?
“Love you enemies”
Luke 6:27-38
7th Sunday Ordinary Time
To err is human. To forgive is divine.
If ever we mistake, it only because we are humans. To survive in an imperfect world it is best to give people sufficient space for errors. Otherwise we would literally get crazy at the rate mistakes occur. It is thus best to forgive.
The Pharisees accused Jesus as blasphemer when He forgave sins because only God can forgive sins. While it might be wrong to say only God can forgive because humans can forgive. It is definitely correct to say that if we forgive we become divine or like God.
In the first book of Samuel David even if given the chance did no harm to Saul who out of jealousy hunted him down.
In Luke’s gospel Jesus improved Moses’ teaching “Love you friends but hate your enemies” into “Love your enemies and do good to those who persecute you.” The reason is to be like God who sends the sun and the rain indiscriminately to both bad and good people alike.
To put up with people’s failures is making us more closely resemble God.
