God Calls Yet Few Follow!

Jesus said “Call him.” … Immediately
he received his sight and followed him on the way.

 Mark 10:46-52

30th SUN ORDINARY TIME B

An old man died. In his last will he bequeathed his big house to both his daughter and son to be shared between the two. While his daughter had stayed with a family of her own, his son had been lost and away for twenty years. His son had rebelled because the father took away the son’s fiancée. Repentant the father had reached out for one last time to his son.

Like this contrite father, God reaches out to people especially those who are far from Him.

God called His people back from distant Babylon to return to Israel after a long exile. Jer 31:7-9

In the gospel Jesus called the blind man sitting by the road side to come and talk with Him.

The blind man squatted at the side while the crowd walked by in the middle of the road. He had actually been pushed to the corner by the people. In fact when he shouted after Jesus the crowd tried to quiet him. The people at all cost prevented him from coming near Jesus.

But Jesus called him. Jesus in fact conversed with him a thing which He did not do to anyone from the huge crowd. And Jesus cured his blindness much to the dismay perhaps of the crowd.

The episode ends by saying that only this man followed Jesus while the rest just tagged along.

God calls everyone. But not everyone hears His call because not everyone listens. Thus not everyone gets to talk with Him. Not everyone gets converted and follows Him. Sadly some people still block other people from approaching Jesus.

This Sunday God calls us once more. Do we listen? Do we get converted? Do we hinder some from approaching God?
