My words will never pass away

“Learn
a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you
know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see these things happening,
know that he is near, at the gates. Amen, I say to you, this generation
will not pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and
earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

 Mk 13:24-32

33rd SUN ORDINARY TIME Cycle B

One morning there was a surprise drug test among the employees at the city hall. Some employees were afraid saying “I did not study for this. I fear that I might fail.”

A father seeing the report card of his daughter full of failing marks asked “You failed in all your subjects. Is there anything test at all that you passed?” The daughter replied “the pregnancy test”.

A sick patient gets a call from his Doctor.
The Doctor says “I have your test results back. I’ve got bad news and worse news.”
The guy says “What’s the bad news?”
“You have 24 hours to live.”
“That’s terrible! What could be worse than that?”
“I forgot to call you yesterday.”

Everyone is afraid of tests. Not only students but everyone like employees who fear evaluation from their employers, sick patients afraid of laboratory results, companies fearing government inspection.

But there is one test which everyone fear the most: judgement day at the end of the world. Today’s gospel describes it as full of catastrophes: the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

But what is really terrifying is what Daniel wrote in his book “Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake; some shall live forever, others shall be an everlasting horror and disgrace.”

The question is will you be among those who go to everlasting life?

The answer is yes if only we hold on to the words of Jesus. For heaven and earth will pass away but His Words will not pass away.
