“But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it,
who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.” Mt 13:1-9
15th Ordinary Sunday Cycle A
There was a political candidate who made a lot of promises to the voters during the campaign period. The promises were all good like lowering price of basic commodities, increasing of worker’s wages, building of houses. Understandably he won the election by landslide victory. Sadly once in power he forgot all his promises and never fulfilled any of them. His words were nice but unacted. Thus people stopped believing whatever he said.
Words are powerful only if there are acted upon. Such is what we hear from the first reading regarding the word of God. God fulfills His word. “My word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.” Is 55:10-11
God acts upon His words. But how about us? Are our words mere empty promises. Or are they powerful because we act on them? His invitation to us is to do the same thing He does – that is act upon our words.
The power of the word is in its fulfilment. We are reminded of this whenever we pray “ and the Word was made flesh”. May this Angelus prayer urge us to act upon our own words but most specially to live by God’s words to people who hear and listen to us day by day. Jesus said “A sower went out to sow… But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.”
