Discipline

Jesus said:”Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter
but will not be strong enough.”
 Luke 13:22-30

21st SUNDAY Ordinary Time Cycle C

Vice President Sarah Duterte has asked DepEd to return C.A.T. in the high school. I saw how C.A.T. has deteriorated through the years in our school, from snappy moves to lousy ones, from crawling in the field under the sun’s heat to marching inside a school gym, and so on. I also am aware of the abuses that must be checked if ever CA.T. is restored into the present curriculum.

Some young people have protested the move for good reasons. But others believe it is necessary to have reserved forces ready for national defense in case of attacks.

A few Asian countries maintain compulsory military service for all citizens for two full years where they learn martial arts among other things.

One thing is certain this military training is good for discipline. And the readings this Sunday talk of discipline.

In the letter to the Hebrews, no less than God promotes discipline. One must not lose heart in being disciplined because “The Lord loves those whom He disciplines.” It may cause initial pain but its fruit is peaceful righteousness. Hebrew 12:5-7.11-13.

In the gospel Jesus suggests to enter the narrow gate. Only the strong manage to pass through. But it leads to life eternal while the wide gate easily leads to damnation. No doubt Jesus has entered this gate though His passion and death.

In another passage Jesus tells us He is the gate. We must enter Him by following His example of discipline and self-abnegation.
