God is Love

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” Jn 3:16-18

Trinity Sunday

There were two friends – a Christian and a pagan who one day agreed to visit each other’s place of worship. They first visited the pagan temple where at the entrance they were greeted by two huge angry statues both armed with swords. The pagan explained that one was the god of punishment and the other was the god of protection. One can pray to the god of revenge to punish one’s enemies. In case the god of revenge runs after him one can pray to the god of protection. In the end the two gods would be fighting. Then they visited next the Christian Church and inside they saw a big crucifix. The Christian explained that Jesus out of His love died on the cross taking for Himself the punishment of Christians.

When we were kids, we were taught in our catechism that there is only one God. And that in this one God there are three Divine Persons – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. This is a dogma of faith that is hard to understand. Indeed it is a mystery no one can comprehend.

However now we understand more that God loves us. God the Father loves us and gave us life in creating us. God the Son loves us and saved us by dying on the cross in our place. God the Holy Spirit loves us and continues to help us live as true followers of Christ in the world.

When on Mt. Sinai Moses was handed the ten commandments, he was told that “Yahweh was a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity.” Ex 34:4b-6, 8-9

St. Paul advised the people of Corinth “Mend your ways, encourage one another,
agree with one another, live in peace.” They must be like God who is a God of love and peace. 2 Cor 13:11-13

God is love and as God’s children we too must put on love.
