God’s Mercy and Man’s Sins

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry..

Luke 4:1-13

1st Sunday of Lent Cycle C

Lent is the time we remember the passion and death of Jesus. Thus during this season we are invited to repent of our sins since they are the reasons why Jesus suffered and died.

However often times we overdo thinking of our sins that we forget the mercy of God. We often think only of Christ’s suffering that we forget that He rose from the death only after three days in the bosom of the earth.

Many times a sinner is prevented from returning to God because of this. Many a times too many fervent Catholics in the Church aggravate the situation when they tell sinful people that cannot enter they church because of their irregular lives. Does God think or act in this manner?

Remember the parable of the Prodigal Son who rehearsed his confession of his sins before arriving at his father’s home. When he finally faced his father, he was not able to finish his confession because the father cut him short in telling the servants to begin the celebration for the lost son has been found. In truth the father did not even listen to the son’s confession.

Does God listen to our confession. Is He really interested in our sins? I think not. For God, it is not our sins that interests Him but what we do after we sin. Do we repent believing that God in His great love for us will forgive us in spite of our betrayal? Do we stand up every time we fall?

Falling is part of walking on earth. We might fall many times but what matters most is standing up after each time we fall. Do we continue on approaching God each time we fail?

God does not give up on us. Do we easily give up on ourselves?
