Holy Family Sunday
When Joseph and Mary had fulfilled all that was required by the law of the Lord, they returned to their home in Nazareth, where the child Jesus grew up in strength, filled with wisdom. Luke 2:22-40.
There was once a young woman with a very catholic grandmother who was also an illegal alien. Her mother flirted with many men among them a popular but egotistic actor, her father who had been absent in her life for so many years till late. She was recently married to a policeman who shortly got killed by criminals he had been investigating. Now she is the fiancé of a rich playboy owner of a hotel the site of a few mysterious murders. Her already complicated life turned for the worst when the underworld syndicates got involved. But in spite of such complexity her family survived through it all because of great love. She used to say “We are a family. And a family does this for each member.”
“E pluribus unum” is the saying adopted by the United States of America. From its many states, America emerges as one nation. This saying can also be adopted by each of our families. We might have big differences but as long as we have love we would survive everything that comes our way. In every failure we forgive. In every crisis we sacrifice self for the sake of the other.
Today we celebrated the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Jesus was obedient Son of God who became man and suffered to save us. Mary was the virgin who chose nonetheless to become mother because she was handmaid of the Lord. Joseph was the simple carpenter who forgot himself to protect his wife and adopted son. Their family was not perfect either. Each had to make adjustments if only to do the will of God. The Holy Family is actually not different from our families made up of weak persons with a lot of defects. With love shown in forgiveness, we, like Jesus, Mary and Joseph, would go through it all and always emerge as one happy family.
