From May 26 to June 1, 2024, the Lay Mission Partners of Don Bosco Formation Center (DBFC), including teaching and non-teaching staff, embarked on an enriching retreat and excursion in the picturesque Davao region.

The retreat, held in a serene and secluded resort in the Island Garden City of Samal, was a standout experience. Led by Fr. Erwin Joey E. Cabilan, SDB, under the theme ‘A Retreat for Busy People: Mindfulness and Stress Reduction,’ the participants were guided through a series of one-of-a-kind mindfulness, prayer, and gratitude sessions. This unique retreat offered a rare opportunity for the participants to step away from their daily routines and rejuvenate their minds and spirits.

Complementing the retreat, the group visited various Salesian settings across the Davao region. They journeyed to Don Bosco in Dacudao, Calinan, Davao City, where the Salesians serve at Mary Help of Christians Parish. They also visited Don Bosco in Dahican, Mati, Davao Oriental, where the Salesians serve at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish and the Don Bosco Mati Training Center. These visits provided profound insights into the Salesian mission and its transformative impact on local communities.

As part of their spiritual journey, the group visited the Carmelite Monastery in Mati, Davao Oriental, which features a Prayer Garden with life-sized statues and tableaux depicting the different mysteries of the Rosary. They also visited Davao City Cathedral, which highlights a unique architecture that features a Balangay boat structure and incorporates elements symbolizing unity among different religions, blending cultural heritage with modern design.

The group also embarked on several field trips to increase their environmental awareness. They toured the Philippine Eagle Center in Davao City, dedicated to saving the endangered species of Philippine Eagles. They marveled at the breathtaking view of Mt. Apo from Jardín de Señorita Mountain Resort in Digos City, Davao del Sur. They explored the Monfort Bat Sanctuary in Samal, Davao del Norte, which holds a Guinness World Record for having the world’s largest known population of Geoffrey’s Rousette fruit bats.

Cultural and educational excursions included visits to Subangan Museum in Mati, Davao Oriental, where the largest sperm whale skeleton named Davo is showcased, and Museo Dabawenyo in Davao City, where participants had the chance to play and dance to the tunes of Bangkakaw, an indigenous musical instrument. These museum tours enriched their knowledge of the history, culture, arts, and natural resources of the Davao region.

The group also indulged in various recreational activities, from leisurely swims to city tours, fully immersing themselves in the vibrant Davao region. These activities added a touch of fun and entertainment to their retreat and excursion, making their experience even more memorable.

This retreat and outing not only provided relaxation and spiritual growth but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and deeper appreciation for the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Davao region among the Lay Mission Partners of DBFC. The participants are grateful to those who made this retreat and excursion possible and memorable, including the sponsors and benefactors, particularly the Cañedo and Escabillas families.
