With God Everything is Possible

by Honesto Geronimo

The angel said to Mary,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”

Lk 1:26-38

Mary had been engaged to Joseph but her plan was to remain a virgin all her life. After all, what could please God more than that. Yet to her surprise, God wanted the opposite. God wanted her to be a mother, but not just any mother but mother of the Savior.

Mary did not understand how could she beget a child because although engaged she had no relations with Joseph. She did not doubt God nor did she oppose His plan.

In fact even after Gabriel’s mention of the intervention of the Holy Spirit to make possible what was impossible, Mary remained confused. But in her confusion she still said “yes” to God believing that God knows best.

For her great faith and prompt obedience two impossible things was made possible: first God became man in Jesus, and second Mary became a mother while remaining a virgin. That’s why Mary is dressed simultaneously in blue the virgin’s color and red which is the color for mothers.
