Padayon: Salesian Youth Movement Philippines Thrives at National Assembly Days 2023

Talisay City, Cebu – From June 28 to July 2, 2023, Don Bosco Retreat House in Lawaan, Talisay City, Cebu served as a hub of vibrant energy and enthusiasm as the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) Philippines held its National Assembly Days (NADS) 2023. With the theme “Padayon,” which translates to continue or carry on, the event aimed to reinforce the significance of the movement amidst the challenges of the new normal to foster formation, celebrate the movement’s roots in Christ, promote fellowship, and plan for the future.
The National Assembly Days 2023 brought together participants from three Salesian provinces in the Philippines, namely Philippine North Province (FIN), Philippine South Province (FIS) and Philippine Province (FIL). The event gathered SYM leaders, animators, Salesian priests, and Salesian Sisters, all united by their commitment and passion for youth empowerment. Facilitating the planning process was Fr. Fidel Ma. Orendain, SDB, FIS Provincial Superior, who guided the participants throughout the assembly.
The first day of the assembly, known as Day 0, kicked off with the arrival of participants, followed by the registration. A Salesianity talk ensued, focusing on the life of Don Bosco and Mary Mazarello, the Salesians, and the local and global impact of Salesian works in the Philippines. This session laid the foundation for the forthcoming discussions and activities.
Day 1 commenced with a deep dive into the SYM’s core principles. A talk on the essential points of the Primer was delivered, refreshing the participants’ understanding of the movement’s foundations. Moreover, a session on the Profile of a Salesian Youth Leader (SYL) was carried on focusing on the SYL’s Attitudes, Skills, and Knowledge. To paint a clearer picture of the Salesian Youth Movement’s current landscape, a demographic talk was conducted, highlighting the diverse membership of today’s SYM. The day concluded with a joyful Barrio Fiesta Dinner, which brought everyone together for a delightful evening of camaraderie and festivity.
On Day 2, the participants engaged in a crucial discussion on the E-PEST (Ecclesial, Politics, Economy, Socio-Cultural, and Technology) framework. This presentation and subsequent deliberation enabled the participants to analyze and understand the challenges and opportunities faced by the youth today, fostering an environment of open dialogue and idea exchange.
Day 3 proved to be a productive day as the participants worked collaboratively to craft a manifesto, encapsulating their aspirations and commitments as Salesian Youth Leaders. Additionally, a session was dedicated to calendaring national and local activities, ensuring an organized approach for the next three years. The day ended on a high note with a variety show, showcasing the remarkable talents within the SYM community.
Day 4 of the assembly featured a visit to the revered Simala Shrine. The day continued with a fellowship event at Casay Beach in Dalaguete, where the participants enjoyed bonding, games, and relaxation, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie among all attendees.
NADS 2023 did not only achieve its objectives but also provided a platform for the young to reaffirm their commitment to the Salesian charism. By fostering formation, celebrating their faith, promoting fellowship, and planning for the future, NADS 2023 empowered these young leaders to carry on the Salesian mission in their respective communities.
With the unwavering support of the Salesian priests, Salesian Sisters, and the entire Salesian family, the NADS 2023 serve as a catalyst for the movement’s continued growth and impact on the lives of young people throughout the Philippines. As the Salesian Youth Movement strides forward, it remains steadfast in its dedication to nurturing the youth, guided by the values and teachings of Don Bosco. Salesian Youth, Padayon!
